Let’s Celebrate: May. Fun Activities, holidays and books to enjoy this month.

It’s May, can you believe it? May always seems to be a busy month…graduations, Mother’s Day, end of school year shenanigans. Here in Kansas the weather has been pretty ideal for getting outside and loading up on Vitamin D. My boys have even said it was, “too hot” a couple of days, which is not good because it is most certainly, not hot yet! I’m looking forward to lots of outdoor activities and gatherings this month. Here is a few ideas to keep you celebrating and making memories throughout the month of May!

Days to Celebrate

Here are some fun National holidays that caught my eye for May. Of course, there are a ton of national holidays, so check out this website and see if there are any that you think might be fun and meaningful to your family!

  • May 9th- Mother’s Day
  • May 20th- Pick Strawberries Day
  • May 21st- Pizza Party Day
  • May 25th- Wine Day
  • May 31st- Memorial Day

There are also several of Feast Days this Month: (there are many more feast days…there might be some others that hold special meanings for your family)

  • May 13th- Feast of the Ascension/ Our Lady of Fatima
  • May 23rd- Pentecost
  • May 30th- Most Holy Trinity
  • May 31st- Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Activities to Enjoy

Go for a Color walk- Go for a walk and look for flowers and other plants of every color.

Go on a Picnic- Plan to eat al fresco! It can be as simple or as extravagant as you like. We love a good pizza picnic or snack picnic. The location can be anywhere—your backyard, a favorite park or a new place to explore!

Make a bird feeder- We had so much fun watching the birds at our airbnb on a recent trip, were excited to make a bird feeder to attract more birds to our yard. Here is a post with quite a few diy bird feeder ideas.

Play a Backyard Game- May is the perfect month to get outside and play a game—if you have a whole crew give kickball a try. If your short on numbers play catch or toss a frisbee. I’d love to get my hands on an inexpensive croquet set to teach my boys.

Go Berry Picking- Do you have a berry patch near you. Berry picking is one of our favorite spring activities, and I’ve been watching our local patch to see when the berries should be ready!

Books to Checkout

Here are a couple of our favorite books that go along with some of this month’s activity inspiration.

Stella and the Berry Thief– This is a fun new to us book about Stella who loves to grow raspberries and make jam and pies, but she doesn’t love to share and a bear that doesn’t really care!

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Hungry Bear– A fun story about a mouse and it’s attempts to protect it’s precious strawberry.

The Best Mouse Cookie– A lesser known book featuring the If You Give a Mouse a Cookie characters that is super sweet and fun to read.

And The Doorbell Rang– I remember this book from growing up, it’s a surprising story about generosity and sharing.

Bear Sees Colors– I love Karama Wilson books and think she is a master of the rhyme. This bear book would be perfect before heading out on a color walk.

Spreading Cheer

May has both Teacher Appreciation Week (May 3-7) and Nurses Appreciation Week (May 6-12), so it’s a perfect time to shower the teachers and nurses in your life! This year especially I think both these groups of professionals could use a little extra love. Here is a post with some ideas for making a teacher feel extra special. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a hand written note or a gift card for coffee or a yummy meal.

Recipes to Share

A Berry Treat- I don’t bake with berries very often, but I am really excited to whip something up featuring berries this month after we go picking! I think I will try this recipe for berry crumb bars, but this berry cobbler and this berry brownie pizza recipes look like winners, too!

Of course, you can’t celebrate National chocolate chip cookie day with out making a batch of your go to chocolate chip cookies. I will be sharing my sister-in-law’s go to recipe later this month!

Here are the downloads to print for May!

Do you have any special celebrations or activities planned for this month? I’s love to hear how you plan to make memories this May!
